- Winning the Triple Crown is the greatest
- achievement in thoroughbred horse
- racing. A horse, as a 3-year-old, must
- win the three biggest races of the year:
- the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness
- Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes.
- Besides Secretariat, only 10 horses in
- history have won the Triple Crown. They
- were Sir Barton (in 1919), Gallant Fox
- (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral
- (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet
- (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948),
- Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed
- (1978). Gallant Fox was the sire (father)
- of Omaha, making them the only father-
- son combination to win the Triple Crown.
